Welcome

“As a resident of the world of design since birth, I’d like to take some time to celebrate some of the people and things in that world that I admire. I hope you come along for the ride. And, as my name has really taken a beating these last couple of years, -thank you Mr. Bezos, - feel free to think of me here by my nickname: Lex. And, please also enjoy this completely un-recognizable and years old headshot.” - Alexa Hampton

If you could have another home anywhere, where would you live? I have a second home in Fire Island Pines, and there is nowhere else I would rather be - particularly in the summer.

What are three words to describe your style?

1. Detailed

2. Layered

3. Whimsical

Tell us about your childhood bedroom? My mom completely redecorated my room when I was three years old with a Sesame Street theme. I had a bright blue shag carpet and wallpaper with Big Bird, Bert & Ernie, and Mr. Snuffleupagus. On my waterbed I had a comforter with two wide rainbow stripes running vertically up each side and two matching pillow shams that had half rainbow arches. When the bed was made (which was rarely) a full rainbow was created. I had that room until I was 12 years old.

What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? In 2005 I bought a watercolor featuring the opening scene from 9 to 5 by Kelly Falzone-Inouye.  This piece has been prominently featured in every New York apartment I’ve had since.

In the history of design, if you could hire any designer other than yourself, who would it be?
Paul Dupré-Lafon

No room is complete without a beautifully detailed lampshade.

People think of me as extrovert, but I am really an introvert.

Things you omit from:

  • A flower arrangement: Baby’s Breath

  • An hors d’oeuvre platter: Oysters

  • A bar cabinet: Mezcal

A song for:

  • Dinner at home: Slow Song (with Dragonette) by the Knocks

  • Working at your desk: Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful by Paloma Faith

  • Going for a run: Rainbow Land by Miley Cyrus featuring Dolly Parton

What is your biggest Vice? Sunbathing

If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? Clothing. I’d buy every potential size to be sure it fits and then hate myself when I have dozens of things to return.

Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? Sometimes, but the great thing about clothing is that it’s easy to change for the event. At times I am more reserved and at other times more expressive depending on where I’m going.

Who is your star crush? Manu Rios

What is the thing you would never do on a project, but don’t detest when you see others do it?
Open kitchen shelving

If there were a fire, and you could only keep one design book, what would it be? My Paul Depré-Lafon book.

For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? Relevancy - I want my designs to still feel relevant long into the future.
