Welcome

“As a resident of the world of design since birth, I’d like to take some time to celebrate some of the people and things in that world that I admire. I hope you come along for the ride. And, as my name has really taken a beating these last couple of years, -thank you Mr. Bezos, - feel free to think of me here by my nickname: Lex. And, please also enjoy this completely un-recognizable and years old headshot.” - Alexa Hampton

If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live? Charleston, South Carolina or London

What are three words to describe your style?

  • Timeless

  • Layered

  • Architectural

Tell us about your childhood bedroom? I had 5 windows in my bedroom so lots of natural light. My favorite part of my bedroom was the cedar trunk at the end of my bed that I could open with a key to hide all my special things.

What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? Art or the vintage dresser I found on Facebook marketplace for my daughter’s bedroom. It was inexpensive, solid wood and added just the right amount of imperfect.

In the history of design, if you could hire any designer other than yourself, who would it be? Gil Schafer so I can pick his brain

No room is complete without materials that age well. We love to use natural materials in the homes we design. It adds character and depth.

People think of me as effortless, but I am really detail obsessed

Things you omit from

  • A flower arrangement: too much perfection

  • An hors d’oeuvre platter: anything requiring utensils

  • A bar cabinet: paper products

A song for

  • Dinner at home: Michael Buble

  • Working at your desk: Silence

  • Going for a run: More than a Feeling - Boston

If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? (if the product is something specific, please include a link): A handbag

Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? Yes, I own way too many stripes! I would say I’m drawn to textures, muted color palette, and more structural pieces.

Who is your star crush? Or Design crush: Bobby Mcalpine

What is the thing you would never do on a project, but don’t detest when you see others do it?  Overly minimal spaces with no collected elements or the opposite overly maximalist spaces.

What design book do you find yourself going back to again and again? The Great American House or Get Your House Right

For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? Creating homes that feel timeless rather than trend-driven and creating spaces that feel as good as they look.

A Few Favorites:

  • Movie: Father of the Bride

  • Book: Atomic Habits

  • Scent: Aesop Resurrection

  • The fabric you always come back to: linen

  • Dream project: Lake house or a cottage in the Cotswolds

  • Meal: Sushi

  • Drink: Virgin Moscow Mule

  • Hotel: Blackberry Farm in Tennessee - never stayed here but top of my list

  • Travel Destination: Iceland

  • Artist: Local artists

  • A cause near and dear to me: Designing new homes with old soul

  • Thing to collect obsessively: I don’t collect anything but if I did it would be vintage art

  • Era in the history of design: Traditional American - 1800s

  • Museum: Musee D’orsay in Paris

  • Paint Color: Farrow and Ball Downpipe with F&B Shaded White as a close second

  • Dogs, Cats, or No Pets? No pets but my 10 year old daughter is pushing hard for a dog
