Studio N&TL
If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live?
Beatrice: a Notting Hill townhome
Nathan: a dilapidated pied-à-terre in Paris
What are three words to describe your style?
Timeless
Romantic
Collected
Tell us about your childhood bedroom?
Nathan: I thought I was super cool and bought about 20 posters from the local indie cinema, wallpapering the room from floor to ceiling—really leaning into my alt-punk phase.
Beatrice: Think Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette—canopy bed, peach tones, unabashedly girly—tucked into a small top-floor room of a Brooklyn brownstone.
What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house?
Nathan: 1970s Italian coffee table with a travertine base and glass top
Beatrice: Pierre Paulin Tongue chair ca. 1967
In the history of design, if you could hire any designer other than yourself, who would it be?
Beatrice: Cini Boeri
Nathan: Adolf Loos
No room is complete without … Ambient lighting (death to recessed lights)
People think of us as a couple, but we are really best friends!
Things you omit from
A flower arrangement: Eucalyptus and/or Hydrangeas
An hors d’oeuvre platter: Keep it bite-sized—nobody wants ten minutes of chew-and-chat
A bar cabinet: Beatrice: Rum (don’t ask why) Nathan: Anything artificially flavored (don’t ask why)
A song for
Dinner at home: “Paradise” by Sade
Working at your desk: Nathan: “How Soon Is Now?” by The Smiths; Beatrice: “Summer Madness” by Kool & The Gang.
Going for a run: Beatrice: “Right Here, Right Now” by Fatboy Slim; Nathan: a Euro-trash techno set.
Biggest Vice?
Nathan: going out dancing every Friday or Saturday until morning
Beatrice: a dinner party with my nearest and dearest.
If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy?
Beatrice: raiding online auctions
Nathan: raiding MR PORTER
Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? Yes! A mix of vintage and staple pieces—timeless but never boring.
Who is your star crush?
Nathan: Manu Ríos—no explanation needed; if you don’t know him, check his Instagram.
Beatrice: Jude Law in The Talented Mr. Ripley.
What design book do you find yourself going back to again and again? Any of our many design history books—specifically, we love drawing inspiration from Josef Hoffmann, Jean Prouvé, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? Timeless, not trendy—designed to feel special in fifty or a hundred years, like Villa Necchi Campiglio in Milan (an ambitious benchmark).
