Welcome

“As a resident of the world of design since birth, I’d like to take some time to celebrate some of the people and things in that world that I admire. I hope you come along for the ride. And, as my name has really taken a beating these last couple of years, -thank you Mr. Bezos, - feel free to think of me here by my nickname: Lex. And, please also enjoy this completely un-recognizable and years old headshot.” - Alexa Hampton

If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live? I already have a second home in Montauk.  But if I were to have a third it would be in Sri Lanka on the ocean.

Tell us about your childhood bedroom? It was my BR in Cuba that I kept constantly changing.  It was minimal, not by design, but lack of resources to have more furniture.  I did have objects that I loved, i.e. a piece of wood from the Everglades like those wiki waki tropical tree with the roots.

What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? The house itself in Montauk 1984.

In the history of design, if you could hire any designer, who would it be? David Hicks.

No room is complete without good lighting.

People think of me as intimidating, but I am really a puppy.

Things you omit from:

  • A flower arrangement: Greenery

  • An hors d’oeuvre platter: No pigs in a blankets, please.

  • A bar cabinet: I hate bar cabinets.

A song for:

  • Dinner at home: It’s a Quarter to Three

  • Working at your desk: What Kind of Fool am I

  • Going for a run: Here We Go Again

Biggest Vice?  Gardening, travel.

If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? I don’t shop on the internet and sleep like a log so never take Ambien.

Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how?  Classic with an edge to it.  Relaxed, unflashy, neutral tones with subtle coloration (except once in a while when I’m on an Ambien high).

Who is your star crush? Madeline Albright.

What is the one thing you would never decorate your home with, but don’t detest when you see others do it? Pattern, chintz.

If there were a fire, and you could only keep one design book, what would it be? I would take other things… all the design books I have are already embedded in my mind.

For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? Timeless spaces that look as modern today as they did when they were done.
