Welcome

“As a resident of the world of design since birth, I’d like to take some time to celebrate some of the people and things in that world that I admire. I hope you come along for the ride. And, as my name has really taken a beating these last couple of years, -thank you Mr. Bezos, - feel free to think of me here by my nickname: Lex. And, please also enjoy this completely un-recognizable and years old headshot.” - Alexa Hampton

If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live? Melides, Portugal

What are three words to describe your style?
1.
Eclectic
2. Collected
3. Evolving

Tell us about your childhood bedroom? When my parents built the house I grew up in, I was 5 and my mom let me have input as to how the room looked. I loved blue at the time but decided to go green to change it up. When I was 10 I DIY-ed my closet based on a Contact Paper that I applied to the shelves, then made my own stencil of the pattern (pink and blue tulips) that I painted around the bottom near the baseboards in a matching color to the contact paper, of course. I bought matching hangers that I carefully spaced exactly 1 inch apart. My OCD manifested early. Ha. When I was 13, the room was wallpapered in the brightest green, yellow and blue Marimekko Seven Flowers that I could still live with to this day, it was super happy!

What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? I started “antiquing” in my teens with my mom and found a fabulous 1930s art deco bar when I was 19 years old that was a steal for $295.  It has the most fun mirror with a gold shaker and martini glasses in gold when you open the top which folds down to mix drinks.  It is one of the few things that made it across the pond with me to Europe.

In the history of design, if you could hire any designer other than yourself, who would it be?
David Hicks

No room is complete without fresh flowers and books.

People think of me as the life of the party, but I am really a home body.

Things you omit from:

  • A flower arrangement: Baby’s breath

  • An hors d’oeuvre platter: Messy/difficult to eat or fishy bits

  • A bar cabinet keep: All the booze, omit anything plastic

A song for:

  • Dinner at home: John Coltrane The Ballads

  • Working at your desk : 70s Yacht Rock

  • Going for a run: I only run when chased.

Biggest Vice? Four Letter words and Taylor Swift

If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? Design books and expensive smell goods. Diptyque everything!

Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? I was much more into accessorizing when I was a bit younger and wore brighter colors, but I have become more neutral and classic/uniform oriented. Black, white, navy, tan: belt it, rotate and repeat.

Who is your star crush? Tom Ford.

What is the thing you would never do on a project, but don’t detest when you see others do it? Monochromatic rooms.

If there were a fire, and you could only keep one design book, what would it be?
Axel Vervoordt Timeless Interiors

For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? I am not sure about posterity, but I am passionate about keeping traditional craft alive and believe in the significance of something being hand made. I believe in surrounding yourself with things you love, that make you happy and reflect your personality.
