Devin Kirk
If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live? I am currently manifesting a house in Biarritz!
What are three words to describe your style?
· Collected
· Personal
· Unfussy
Tell us about your childhood bedroom? I was constantly changing it but what I remember most is when I was about 14, I had a duvet cover made in a grey wool tartan and recovered the cornices to match. I bought a vintage desk and painted it. I loved a garage sale and a staple gun as a child.
What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? My husband and I got a baby grand piano when we bought our first apartment. I was a little annoyed to have to decorate around it at first but we’ve had some fun late night singalongs and now our son is taking piano lessons on it so it has more than earned its keep. It’s part of the family.
In the history of design, if you could hire any designer, who would it be? Veere Grenney or Sheila Bridges.
No room is complete without an antique “dans son jus” as the French say.
People think of me as a bit rigid, but I am really very open minded.
Things you omit from
· A flower arrangement: More than one kind of flower – a mass of any single type of flower is pretty much always beautiful.
· An hors d’oeuvre platter: Ugly crackers. Even if they taste good, sorry!!
· A bar cabinet: Nothing – more is more!
A song for
· Dinner at home: “Free” by SAULT
· Working at your desk: “Fake Empire” by The National
· Going for a run: “Heated” by Beyonce
Biggest Vice? Gossiping. But not about anyone reading this.
If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? A Harland Miller “This Is Where It’s Fuckin At” screenprint.
Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? Yes. Tailored classics + vintage, on repeat. I love a little high/low for both but quality is key.
Who is your star crush? Julia Roberts.
What is the one thing you would never decorate your home with, but don’t detest when you see others do it? I’m not sure I would do a ruffled chair or sofa skirt in my home but I like when other people do.
What design book do you find yourself going back to again and again? I can’t get enough of Peter Dunham’s inspiring new book.
For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? For finding and creating pieces that add meaning to people’s lives and continue on as part of their family’s story.
