Welcome

“As a resident of the world of design since birth, I’d like to take some time to celebrate some of the people and things in that world that I admire. I hope you come along for the ride. And, as my name has really taken a beating these last couple of years, -thank you Mr. Bezos, - feel free to think of me here by my nickname: Lex. And, please also enjoy this completely un-recognizable and years old headshot.” - Alexa Hampton

If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live? I would gladly take Beauport aka The Henry David Sleeper house on the North Shore of Massachusetts. I could throw a mean cocktail party in the China Trade Room.

What are three words to describe your style? Classical, colorful, and comfortable

Tell us about your childhood bedroom: It was a heady mix of pink florals, antique brown furniture, white wicker, cassette mix tapes, and summer camp scrapbooks.

What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? A Welsh cupboard from the 1700s purchased from Litchfield County Auctions for a song.

In the history of design, if you could hire any designer other than yourself, who would it be? Robert Kime. He was so good at sourcing unique pieces and arranging them in ways that feel both utterly chic and completely comfortable. We’d travel around the world together to source textiles, furniture, lighting and art from all of his very best haunts.

No room is complete without: Something with age and patina. You should never be the oldest thing in the room!

People think of me as an East Coaster, but I am really a native-born Texan. I love the historic architecture and classicism of the East coast but try to imbue it with some of the color and ebullience synonymous with Dallas.

Things you omit from

  • A flower arrangement: A vase that’s the wrong size, shape, and scale.

  • An hors d’oeuvre platter: Anything dietetic or low fat. Indulge!

  • A bar cabinet: Boring, basic glassware. Give me vintage rocks glasses, handmade murano tumblers and crystal coupes!!!

A song for

  • Dinner at home: “Atlantic City” by The Band

  • Working at your desk: I prefer the sweet song of Interior Design podcasts when I work. The Business of Home, Trade Tales, Shop Talk, and The Install are all faves.

  • Going for a run: Lauren Santo Domingo said it best “the only people who should run are children and thieves.”

Biggest Vice? Long baths.

If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy?
Every lot in the upcoming Charlotte Moss sale at Stair

Who is your star crush? Gil Schafer. What a talent. And he just seems so darn nice too!

What is the thing you would never do on a project, but don’t detest when you see others do it? Never say never.

What design book do you find yourself going back to again and again?
RSVP by Nan Kempner. While technically an entertaining book, the homes are fabulous.

For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? Creating truly personal, inviting spaces that fill people’s lives with joy.
