Welcome

“As a resident of the world of design since birth, I’d like to take some time to celebrate some of the people and things in that world that I admire. I hope you come along for the ride. And, as my name has really taken a beating these last couple of years, -thank you Mr. Bezos, - feel free to think of me here by my nickname: Lex. And, please also enjoy this completely un-recognizable and years old headshot.” - Alexa Hampton

If you could have a second home anywhere, where would you live? I have my house in Connecticut where my heart is and an apartment in NY on the 35th floor... nowhere else except maybe a penthouse on the 91st floor of a new building in Shanghai

What are three words to describe your style? 1. Eclectic 2. Classical 3. Fanciful

Tell us about your childhood bedroom?  It had a daybed upholstered in Olive colored suede with a guanaco fur blanket and a pair of checkered leather pillows. Curtains in olive corduroy velvet, Berber rug, all woodwork in blond wood, bookshelves and vitrines, a Louis Philippe game table and a pair of Louis Philippe bergères upholstered in the same corduroy velvet....

What’s the first investment piece you ever bought for your house? I don’t believe in investment pieces I buy what I like and if I make money when I sell them, I am happy otherwise I really don’t care...

In the history of design, if you could hire any designer other than yourself, who would it be? Jean Michel Frank

No room is complete without pets!

People think of me as French, but I am really American

Things you omit from:

  • A flower arrangement: Gladiolas

  • An hors d’oeuvre platter: Pigs in a blanket

  • A bar cabinet: Nothing

A song for:

  • Dinner at home: Beethoven sonatas

  • Working at your desk: Mozart

  • Going for a run: Bach’s cantatas

Biggest Vice? Sugar that is the only one I can publicly admit

If you were on an Ambien high and internet shopping, what would you buy? I never buy anything on the internet and in the last thirty years of Ambien induced slumber I have never had an Ambien high

Do your clothes reflect your design sensibility, if so, how? I have no idea... but probably not because I am excessively classically dressed and that’s not the way I design

Who is your star crush? Ryan Reynolds

What is the thing you would never do on a project, but don’t detest when you see others do it? There is nothing that I would never do

If there were a fire, and you could only keep one design book, what would it be? None, the distilled sum of them is what matters and there is nothing better than memories

For posterity, what would you like your work to be known for? I really don’t want to think about posterity, nor do I care in the least
